Adopting is simple and welcoming. Start by browsing our available animals on this page or visiting the shelter during open hours (Tuesday–Sunday, 10am–6pm). When you find a pet that catches your heart, submit an adoption application online — it takes about 10 minutes and asks about your living situation, experience with pets, and what you're looking for. Our adoption counselor will review your application within 24–48 hours and contact you to schedule a meet-and-greet. During the visit, you'll spend one-on-one time with the animal. If it's a match, you'll complete the paperwork that same day and go home with your new family member. The entire process typically takes 3–5 days.
We primarily rescue and rehome dogs and cats of all breeds, ages, and sizes — from tiny kittens and puppies to senior companions. We occasionally have rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals as well. Our available pets change frequently as new animals are rescued and others find their forever homes. We recommend checking our website regularly or signing up for our weekly "New Arrivals" email to be the first to know when a pet matching your preferences becomes available.
Our adoption fees range from $75–$150 depending on the animal's age and species. This fee covers a tremendous amount of care that would cost $500+ at a private veterinarian: spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipping with lifetime registration, flea/tick treatment, deworming, a comprehensive health exam, and a starter kit with food, a leash or carrier, and educational materials. You also receive a complimentary first follow-up vet visit at one of our partner clinics and lifetime access to our post-adoption support team.
Absolutely — this is one of our highest priorities. Every animal that enters PawsHaven receives a thorough veterinary examination within 24 hours of intake. They receive core vaccinations, are tested for common diseases (heartworm, FIV/FeLV for cats, parvo for dogs), and receive any necessary medical treatment. All animals are spayed or neutered before adoption. Animals with special medical needs — broken bones, dental disease, skin conditions — receive specialized treatment and are only placed for adoption when they've made a full recovery and are in good health.
We understand that sometimes, despite everyone's best efforts, an adoption may not be the right fit. That's why we have a lifetime return policy with absolutely no judgment. If at any point — whether it's 2 weeks or 2 years later — you feel the adoption isn't working, contact us and we will take the animal back into our care. Before that point, our post-adoption support team will work with you on behavioral solutions, training resources, and any adjustments that might help. We never want an animal to end up abandoned, so we make this promise permanent.
There are so many ways to help beyond adoption! You can volunteer at the shelter (we need dog walkers, cat socializers, event helpers, and administrative support). You can become a foster parent, providing a temporary home for animals who need extra TLC before adoption. Financial donations — one-time or monthly — directly fund veterinary care, food, and rescue operations. You can also donate supplies from our wish list (food, blankets, toys, cleaning supplies), sponsor a specific animal's care, or simply share our social media posts to increase adoption awareness. Every action, no matter how small, saves lives.
Yes! Many of our animals thrive in apartments. Cats, small dogs, and older dogs with lower energy levels can be wonderful apartment companions. During the application process, our adoption counselors will help you identify animals best suited to your living space. We'll also discuss exercise routines, enrichment activities, and any building pet policies you should be aware of. Living in an apartment is never an automatic disqualification — we focus on the quality of care and commitment you can provide, not the square footage of your home.
Yes, 100%. PawsHaven Animal Rescue is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization (EIN: XX-XXXXXXX). All monetary donations are fully tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You'll receive an official donation receipt via email immediately after your contribution. For in-kind donations (supplies, vehicles, etc.), we provide a written acknowledgment for your tax records. Please consult your tax advisor for details specific to your situation.
